Waiting for Shinigami
Chapter 8 After lunch with Heero for the third day in a row, Duo met Miss Gracie in the park. She was reading a romance novel whose cover featured a dark-haired woman, dress sliding down her shoulders, being held by a muscled and tanned man with shoulder-length blonde hair. When she saw Duo, she smiled and put down the book. "I can tell without asking that you went on your date. How did it go?" she asked eagerly. Duo smiled back and sat down beside her. "You mean you can't tell that, too? Aren't you too old to be reading this?" he teased, picking up the book she had abandoned. "I thought these were for teenage girls and lonely young women living on frozen dinners," Miss Gracie made a face. "Don't be ridiculous. Most of the women in my swap group are older than me. About half of them have caught their husbands reading them, too." She smiled again. "But I'll forgive you for that comment. You're still young enough that you have a few things left to figure out. Now, back to your date. How was it?" "Good, awkward, scary." Duo shrugged. "All of the above," Miss Gracie smiled. "Believe it or not, that's encouraging. Will you go again, if he asks?' Duo put the book he'd forgotten he was holding back
on the bench. "I've gone to lunch with him the past few days.
Today was different from that night. He told me that he wished I would
find Miss Gracie thought about that. "I think," she said slowly, "that what he's trying to tell you is, he wants you to be happy. Not looking for your purpose seems to imply you don't think you have one. People can't love themselves if they feel useless. I don't know you well enough to assume anything about you personally, Duo, but I do know this: If you don't love yourself, when someday you want to love him, it will make you miserable." Duo stared at the ground for a long time, trying to puzzle that one out. At last, he said, "But why?" "Because you'll be afraid. You'll feel like you
aren't good enough for him, and you'll believe that someday, he'll
figure that out and leave you. So you won't let yourself love him,
no matter The wind blew over them as they sat quietly. Duo wasn't
sure what to say or do. He felt Miss Gracie was right, but was that
really why he had drifted around for so long? When, one day, he "Well, come on, then," Miss Gracie said after a few minutes, standing up. "My house is right there on the corner. We can have some of the ginger snaps I made this morning, and you can meet my niece when she gets in from class. She's staying with me while she finishes school. That girl is so smart it scares me. She's studying to be a doctor." Duo smiled and allowed himself to be led back to the old woman's home. He had a feeling that, if he let her, the lady would spoil him to death. Duo called Heero at work and asked him to pick him up at Miss Gracie's house on his way home. He was too full of ginger snaps and pound cake to make the relatively long walk back. When Heero arrived at the address Duo had given him, he wondered who Duo could know living in this old building. He knew that this neighborhood was predominantly retirees living pension checks and poor young couples who wanted a somewhat safe neighborhood to raise their children in. Nevertheless, the numbers matched, and Heero knocked
on the door. A pretty young woman of about twenty-one answered it.
"Oh, hi. Aunt Gracie, your friend's friend is here! Come on in.
She stepped out of the doorway and gestured through a small but neat living room to the doorway directly across from them. Curiously, Heero headed for the sounds of laughter that drifted through it. "Oh, you're right. He is a cute one," was the first thing Heero heard the old woman sitting at the table say. When he looked at her blankly, she laughed. "Don't mind me, I'm old. I can get away with saying anything." Duo smiled at her, and jumped up to kiss Heero on the cheek. "Heero, this is Miss Gracie. Miss Gracie, this is the guy I've been talking nonstop about since I got here." "It's a pleasure to meet you, Heero." "And you, ma'am," he replied politely. Duo had been talking about him? He thought he like that idea. He knew that he liked the way Duo's hand lingered on his arm long after the little peck was over, and suspected the lady before him had something to do with it. Heero was determined to like her, though that didn't seem hard. She had such an open, light-hearted way about her. "Aunt Gracie, aren't you at least going to invite them to stay for dinner?" the pretty girl said from the living room. "You've taken up that young man's entire afternoon. The least you can do is feed him something besides ginger snaps," "That's all right," Duo said, "we should probably be getting home anyway," "Don't mind her," Miss Gracie said, waving her hand in the direction of the living room. "She's such a stick-in-the-mud sometimes. She seems to think I should pay more attention to my cholesterol intake and monitor my blood pressure more closely. I say monitoring your blood pressure is what gives you high blood pressure. Veruca needs to go dancing more often, if you ask me," "Dancing will not make me a better heart surgeon," Veruca called from the living room. "You're right," Miss Gracie retorted. "It will make you a better person." Heero waited until he was back at his own apartment to laugh. "She's something else, your Miss Gracie," he told Duo as he unlocked the apartment door and stepped inside. He grinned. "Isn't she, though? You know, she's the one who really convinced me to go, that night," "Then it seems I owe her a debt of gratitude," Heero said, smiling gently. Duo couldn't help himself. He had to taste Heero, or he knew he would do something even more foolish. He practically threw himself at Heero, before he lost his nerve. His lips touched Heero's, and he practically shivered. His tongue slid across Heero's lower lip, requesting entrance. It was immediately granted. The kiss grew into something hungry. The front door was still wide open, but they didn't care. The entire population of the colonies combined could have walked through it, and Duo wouldn't have given a damn. He moved back against the wall for support, pulling Heero with him. He heard a sound like Heero bracing his hand on the wall by his head, but ignored it. He *didn't* ignore it when Heero's other hand slid under his shirt. It felt so much like someone was clearing their throat, loudly and repeatedly. Not letting go of Heero, Duo opened one eye long enough to see Quatre and Trowa, standing in the doorway, looking very amused. |
